Zygomatic Games overhauls Dobble packaging to reduce environmental impact

The international tabletop and party game publishing studio, Zygomatic, has announced new measures to reduce the environmental impact of its gaming portfolio, starting with the internationally acclaimed Dobble.

Among the steps it is implementing, Zygomatic is stripping the single-use plastic out of the popular symbol-match game by eliminating the plastic insert and the plastic film around the box in favour of a cardboard insert, reducing its plastic use by 95%.

Each Dobble game box will now contain less than one gram of plastic compared to 23 grams previously. On top of this, part of the elements will now be made from recycled materials, including the cardboard insert which will be made from 100% recycled material and the metal box which is made from up to 58% recycled material. In total, up to 24% of the game is made from recycled materials. All cardboard and paper is now FSC certified.

Finally, the game box itself has been scaled down by 20% to lighten the carrying load and materials used. Prior to the changes, the game box weighed 28 grammes – it now comes in at 22.4 grammes.

“Change takes time. However, we intend for all our Dobble games to be packaged in this new packaging by 2024, worldwide,” said the Zygomatic team. “One year of production of these new Dobble game boxes in place of the old boxes would save an estimated 94 tonnes of plastic, paper, and cardboard – the weight of 16 African bush elephants.”

The studio is extending its commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its output across its wider games portfolio featuring titles such as Dobble 360, Rory’s Story Cubes and Perudo.

“We are pleased to be able to introduce this new Dobble game box. However, we want to continue reducing the environmental impact of our Dobble games and other Zygomatic studio games: limiting packaging, reducing plastic, and increasing the use of recycled materials.

“Eco-design is a process of continuous improvement and we hope to go further and offer products that are ever more respectful of the planet.”
