Vivienne Westwood has designs on Asics

New capsule collection will see five trainer styles released over the next few months.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood is teaming with sports brand Asics for the launch of a limited edition capsule collection.

The new range will be a ‘reimagination’ of classic Asics styles, mixing Vivienne’s design elements and prints with Asics’ advanced footwear technology, reported Fashion United.

There will be five styles in the collection, with the first – the Gel-Mai Knit shoe and the Gel-Kayano 5 OG shoe – launching later this week.

The Gel-Mai includes the designer’s archived Squiggle print – which was originally used back in 1981 – while the Gel-Kayano takes inspiration from the print’s original red and orange colourway.

A further three styles are planned for a July launch.

“Asics are brilliant technicians – known for their expertise, they are the best in their field,” said Andreas Kronthaler, creative director of Vivienne Westwood. “We love the look of their trainers because they are form following function – which attracted us to this collaboration. We wanted to create something real. They are not just decoration or a fashion statement – they are functional. With this collaboration we wanted to bring together both.”
