Top licensors pass $262bn at global retail in 2015

Annual global licensor listing is topped by The Walt Disney Company.

The latest annual Top 150 Global Licensors report has been released – with the companies included in the listing accounting for more than $262 billion in global retail sales of licensed merchandise in 2015.

Put together by License Global magazine – and included in its May 2016 issue – the report is headed up by The Walt Disney Company. Indeed, it continues to dominate the listing with $52.5 billion in licensed merchandise sale, up $7.2 billion from the 2015 report.

The growth can be attributed to blockbuster brands including Star Wars, Frozen and The Avengers among others.

Notably, 56 of the brands profiled had retail sales of $1 billion or more in 2015. This accounted for over $235 billion in retail sales or 90% of the total.

There were 12 new companies joining the listing including Moomin (63), Girl Scouts of the USA (104), Paramount Pictures (112), Moose Toys (137), Genius Brands International (149) and Boy Scouts of America (150) among others.

“This report is a barometer of what the hottest brands are among consumers and at retailers around the globe,” said Tony Lisanti, global editorial director of License Global.

The top 10 global licensors reported more than $137 billion in 2015, an increase of almost $6 billion from the $131.4 billion reported by the top 10 in 2014. It accounts for more than 52% of overall retail sales of licensed merchandise worldwide.
