The Very Hungry Caterpillar eats up competition at Book Awards

Title wins Children’s Classic at Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Awards 2019.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle has been named Sainsbury’s Children’s Classic 2019 at the retailer’s Children’s Book Awards.

The book – which is celebrating its 50th anniversary and has a comprehensive licensing programme – was chosen for ‘bringing joy to generations of children’.

“Thank you so much for honouring my book,” said Eric. “I’m delighted that my stories have been enjoyed by my friends in the UK. The Very Hungry Caterpillar turned 50 this year, and I turned 90 so this is a perfect way to celebrate!”

The awards – now in their sixth year – are in partnership with BookTrust. Judged by a panel of experts, the awards aim to encourage parents and carers to spend more time reading with their children.

Elsewhere, Where’s Wally: Exciting Expeditions from Walker Books was named as the winner in the Favourite Characters category.

Danika Cave, books buyer for Sainsbury’s, commented: “As a child I loved books and I’m so passionate about children reading. Sainsbury’s is proud to offer dynamic and diverse books and these awards are a way to show our customers how much we support children reading.”
