The Lion King roars to the top of UK box office

Live action remake takes £16.7 million over the weekend.

Disney’s live action remake of The Lion King has roared to the top of the UK box office, taking over £16.67 million in its opening weekend.

According to Screen Daily, this is the second biggest opening of the year, behind Avengers: Endgame which took £31.4m back in April (a UK box office record).

It also marks the second biggest Disney live action opening behind Beauty and the Beast (which started with £19.7m in March 2017). On the Friday alone, The Lion King took over £5 million.

In addition, The Lion King earned an estimated $454.4 million worldwide over the weekend, taking it to $531 million after ten days. The movie has become the ninth biggest global debut of all time with an opening of $185m in the US.

The success of The Lion King means that Disney now has the four highest opening weekends in 2019 and six of the top seven.
