Retailer maintains like for like sales growth in Q1 trading statement for 2017/18.
Tesco has reported its sixth consecutive quarter of growth this morning, revealing its first quarter trading statement for 2017/18.
The retailer saw group like for like sales growth of 1.0%, while UK like for like sales growth stood at 2.3%. This was driven by 2.7% like for like sales growth in food.
The grocer said it had seen a positive response to its ‘Little Helps to Healthier Living’ campaign, with particular strong volume growth in fresh food at 1.6% with significant market outperformance.
There was also a 1.3% growth in customer transactions – ten million more than last year.
Dave Lewis, chief executive for Tesco, stated: “In tough market conditions, we have stayed true to our commitment to helping customers – working closely with our supplier partners to keep prices low.
“Customers have responded by doing more of their shopping with us and as a result we continue to grow volumes, particularly in fresh food.
“This is a good start to the year, with our sixth consecutive quarter of positive like-for-like sales growth across the group. We are confident in our plans to create long-term, sustainable value for our key stakeholders and to deliver on the ambitions we have set out.”
