Star Wars boost for Disney CP in Q1

Revenues for consumer products and interactive media division reach $1.9 billion. 

Disney has reported record quarterly earnings for the period ending January 2 2016 – with the consumer products arm having been, unsurprisingly, significantly boosted by Star Wars.

Overall, the company reported earnings of $2.9 billion for Q1, compared with $2.2 billion for the prior year quarter.

From a licensing numbers point of view, however, the consumer products and interactive media division saw revenues for the period grow 8% to $1.9 billion.

Segment operating income rose by 23% to $860 million.

The leap has been attributed to the significant contribution made by Star Wars in merchandise licensing, as well as success from Star Wars: Battlefront in the games space.

The franchise also had an impact in revenues for the studio entertainment division – increasing 46% to $2.7 billion and operating income up 86% to $1.0 billion.

“Driven by the phenomenal success of Star Wars, we delivered the highest quarterly earnings in the history of our company,” said Robert Iger, chairman and ceo.
