Roald Dahl words added to Oxford English Dictionary

Scrumdiddlyumptious, human bean and witching hour among those added.

A number of Roald Dahl’s words have been added to the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Dahlesque, golden ticket, human bean, Oompa Loompa, scrumdiddlyumptious and witching hour have all been added to the new edition of the OED.

The dictionary has also revised its definitions for some Roald Dahl terms already included – such as frightsome, gremlin, scrumptious and splendiferous.

Earlier in the year, the Oxford University Press published a special Roald Dahl Dictionary (pictured) containing 8,000 words which the author invented or made popular.

“The inclusion in OED of a number of words coined by or associated with Roald Dahl reflects both his influence as an author and his vivid and distinctive style,” Michael Proffitt, chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, told The Independent.

“For many children Roald Dahl’s work is not only one of their first experiences of reading, but also their earliest exposure to the creative power of language.”
