The Rise of Skywalker heading for $1bn barrier at box office

The Walt Disney Company also confirms 2019 releases reached $13.15bn at global box office.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is on course to smash through the $1 billion barrier at the global box office, after a strong Christmas and New Year.

According to Screen Daily, the movie was boosted to $815.4 million worldwide after a ‘mighty’ New Year’s Day performance.

When it passes $1 billion, The Rise of Skywalker will become the seventh film launched by Disney in 2019 to do so, and the first film to cross the barrier in 2020.

The news comes as The Walt Disney Company confirmed that its 2019 releases reached $13.15 billion at the global box office. The total includes $8.8234bn internationally and $4.3283bn in North America, Screen Daily reported.

Of the total amount, the Disney stable accounted for $11.1191bn including an industry record $7.3543bn at the international box office, overtaking Disney’s $4.604bn in 2016.

Other records included Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame securing the all-time global box office crown with $2.798bn; Frozen 2 setting the highest global animated opening of all time with $358.4m; and Disney posting an industry record for annual box office in EMEA of over $2.75bn.
