Value retailer enjoyed its ‘busiest ever Christmas’ with strong growth across all categories.
Value retailer Aldi has reported a record turnover over Christmas, saying that strong growth was enjoyed across all categories.
The discount supermarket said total UK sales were over 15% higher during December 2017 compared to December 2016.
The festive boost meant that Aldi’s total sales in the UK and Ireland during 2017 cruised over the £10 billion mark for the first time.
Boss Matthew Barnes commentd: “This was our busiest-ever Christmas as millions of festive shoppers switched to Aldi from more expensive food retailers.
“Although we saw strong growth across all categories, the performance of our premium Specially Selected range in particular surpassed all expectations.
“This is a clear sign that shoppers knew they could indulge in Christmas treats and festive essentials at Aldi for a fraction of the price they would pay elsewhere.”
Aldi has recently upped its game across licensed products as it looks to further expand its offering. Strong focuses were placed on brands including My Little Pony and Despicable Me among others in 2017 – capitalising on key film launches – while it also added licensed ride-ons to its toy offering ahead of the Christmas period.
