Rebellion to reboot Roy of the Rovers

British football comics legend set to return for a new generation.

Rebellion is to reboot the iconic British football comic, Roy of the Rovers.

After 16 years on the subs bench, 2018 will see the return of the brand, with Rebellion looking to refresh and re-imagine it for the 21st century.

The new Roy of the Rovers will star a young Roy Race as he starts his career at Melchester Rovers, a story that will encompass all of the drama, goals and glory of the modern game.

Rebellion acquired Roy of the Rovers from Egmont UK in 2016. It will be revealing the new look, the creative team, brand partnerships and digital developments among other activity over the coming months.

The new publishing plan will include three hardback graphic novels per football season, launching in September 2018, January 2019 and April 2019. There will also be illustrated fiction titles and graphic novels arriving in September 2018.

A licensing programme is also in development.

Damian Treece, Rebellion brand licensing manager, told The Source: “Having been exposed to a healthy dose of Roy of the Rovers growing up, it’s a huge thrill to be working on a project that will allow a whole new generation to engage with a cultural icon.

“Alongside the terrific new publishing, we’re also currently engaging with leading football industry partners and have a strategy in place to develop desirable, authentic products and experiences across both Rebooted and Nostalgia strands of the Roy of the Rovers brand.”
