The Astrid Lindgren Company teams up with charity in Pippi’s 75th anniversary year.
Ahead of Pippi Longstocking’s 75th birthday on May 21 next year, Stockholm-based The Astrid Lindgren Company will be partnering with Save the Children.
The focus of the new global partnership will be to support the charity’s work with children on the move, and has ambitions to generate more than €750,000.
Global bestseller Pippi Longstocking was first published in Sweden in the autumn of 1945, a time when millions of people – many of them children – were forced to flee their homes following the Second World War.
The strong female character has since inspired millions of children around the world, recruiting a global network of fans including Madonna, Lady Gaga, Lauren Child and former First Lady, Michelle Obama who has called Pippi Longstocking her favourite children’s book.
“I cannot think of any better way to celebrate Pippi’s anniversary than to let her support the world’s most vulnerable children today – girls on the move,” said Olle Nyman, ceo of The Astrid Lindgren Company and Astrid’s grandson. “My grandmother’s struggle for children’s rights was lifelong. It is possible to see in all her stories, but also in her work as an opinion former and social commentator. She was an ambassador for all children, regardless of their background or life situation.
“For us at The Astrid Lindgren Company, it is important to continue her work. We are very happy and proud of the opportunity to work with Save the Children.”
Gemma Sherrington, executive director of fundraising and marketing at Save the Children, commented: “Save the Children is excited to partner with The Astrid Lindgren Company. Astrid Lindgren was a true child rights champion. This partnership enables us to invest in and focus on programmes for children on the move with a special focus on girls, who face higher risks at every stage of their journey wherever they may be in the world.”
