Nintendo theme park planned for Osaka, Japan

Park will have a Super Mario focus and will open by 2020.

The world’s first theme park based on Nintendo games is due to open in Osaka, Japan, according to reports.

Japanese publication Sankei said that the £250 million park will be set in Universal Japan and will be completed by 2020, in time for the Tokyo Olympics.

It is believed that flagship brand Super Mario will be the focus, although the themed zone could also feature the likes of Luigi, Zelda, Donkey Kong and various Pokémon characters.

The park was initially announced by Nintendo and Universal last year, with a statement saying it will feature ‘Nintendo’s most famous characters and games’.

It is also being mooted that Nintendo is due to make its smartphone debut this month, and will release a total of five smartphone games by March 2017.

It is working with Japanese online games maker DeNA on the initiative.
