HMV Vault is Europe’s largest entertainment store as new owner begins revival plans.
The new owner of HMV has kicked off his plans to revive the brand and the retailer, opening a new megastore in Birmingham – with its square footage making it the largest entertainment store in Europe.
HMV Vault – situated in Birmingham’s Dale End – stocks approximately 80,000 CDs, 25,000 vinyl albums, 40,000 DVDs and 20,000 Blu-rays. In addition, it also offers a wide range of merchandise and more than 7,000 books, according to Retail Sector.
Sunrise Records and its owner, Doug Putman, acquired HMV out of administration earlier this year. He has already reopened 14 of the 28 HMV stores which were closed last December, with the chain now standing at 114 outlets.
The new Birmingham store will also put a greater emphasis on live performances, with former One Direction member Liam Payne performing at the opening.
Speaking to The Guardian, Doug commented: “I believe we can grow the chain. A lot of high streets are challenged and struggling. The UK has got an amazing high street and we want to support that. There is something really special about it and when it’s gone, it’s gone.”
