Title sold almost 73,000 copies in the past week.
Mog’s Christmas Calamity – the Judith Kerr book released as part of Sainsbury’s Christmas campaign – has topped the UK book chart for a third week.
The title sold 72,935 copies in the last week, according to Nielsen Bookscan.
In its first three days on sale, Mog’s Christmas Calamity sold 74,453 copies and has outsold all previous Mog books.
The book is being sold by Sainsbury’s, with all profits going to Save the Children. It has raised almost £900,000 for its UK child literacy campaign so far.
Notably, the book’s first week sales were the highest for a children’s book since J K Rowling’s Harry Potter spin off, The Tales of Beedle the Bard in 2008.
It is the third book to have sold more than 100,000 copies in one week this year, and also only the second picture book to go to number one in 2015 (after The Dinosaur That Pooped a Lot from McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter).
In addition, Mog’s Christmas Calamity’s stay at number one marks the tenth consecutive week a children’s book has taken the top spot. Four out of the top five books are children’s titles.
