Mickey celebrates 90 years with raft of activity

Worldwide celebrations to kick off next week including a fashion show and new TV special.

Disney has confirmed the launch of a worldwide celebration to honour 90 years of Mickey Mouse.

The cross-company festivities will continue through 2018 and beyond and will include an exclusive fashion show, a new television special and a celebration at Disney parks and resorts among other activity.

The party begins on March 7, with a runway fashion event – entitled The Happiest Show on Earth – featuring a Mickey-inspired collection designed by couture brand Opening Ceremony.

Other activity planned for 2018 includes ABC airing a star-studded celebration of Mickey with special guests and performances, as well as the launch of season two of Mickey and the Roadster Racers in the autumn on Disney Junior. New Mickey Shorts will also air from spring on Disney Channel.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts around the world will celebrate Mickey’s 90th on November 18, marking the day with commemorative merchandise, photo locations and more.

Beginning in late 2018 and into 2019 the World’s Biggest Mouse Party, saluting Mickey and Minnie, will take place at Disney Parks worldwide. In addition, Disney On Ice will be creating Mickey’s 90th pre-shows for productions touring the US, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

In France, 38 design and art schools will take part in ‘Mickey Is Art’, a contest in which students will craft works of Mickey, inspired by their favorite artistic movement. The winning designs will be displayed this summer in 12 major train stations in France and will be for sale this September at Galerie Glénat in Paris.

Disney Store launched the Mickey Mouse Memories Collection in January, while Disney Publishing Worldwide is to introduce more than 30 titles globally.

On top of this, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club will be celebrating the birthday throughout the year with various activities.

From April, Mickey fans across EMEA will also have the chance to participate in a new project.

Fans will have the opportunity to participate in the creation of a mash-up video showing how Mickey Mouse continues to inspire creativity and originality. These contributions will be ignited by social media influencers, who will kick-start Mickey-inspired challenges to encourage fans to see, create and share their own content.

To join the conversation on social, fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #Mickey90.
