Mattel unveils new Barbie body types

Expanded Fashionistas line includes tall, curvy and petite dolls, plus variety of skin tones.

Mattel has expanded its Barbie Fashionistas line – introducing three new body types, as well as a variety of skin tones, hair styles and outfits.

The new dolls “represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them”, according to Evelyn Mazzocco, svp and global general manager for Barbie.

The 2016 Fashionistas doll line includes four body types (the original, plus tall, curvy and petite), seven skin tones, 22 eye colours, 24 hairstyles and numerous fashions and accessories.

It continues the diversity of the line, following on from 2015 when the brand added 23 dolls with new skin tones and hair colours, as well as a flat foot.

“For more than 55 years, Barbie has remained a global, cultural icon and a source of inspiration and imagination to millions of girls around the world,” said Richard Dickson, president and chief operating officer of Mattel.

“Barbie has reflected the world girls see around them. Her ability to evolve and grow with the times, while remaining true to her spirit, is central to why Barbie has remained the number one fashion doll in the world.”

The new collection will launch worldwide from spring.
