Harry Potter stars for Argos on World Book Day

Character accounted for almost 25% of total costume sales, says retailer.

Harry Potter was the most popular character for this year’s World Book Day at Argos, the retailer has revealed.

The popular wizard was the biggest selling costume for 2018, accounting for nearly 25% of total costume sales – and topping the list more than 20 years after the first book was published.

The top ten character costumes were:

  1. Harry Potter
  2. Gruffalo
  3. Spider-man
  4. Superman
  5. Willy Wonka
  6. Star Wars Stormtrooper
  7. Where’s Wally?
  8. Star Wars Darth Vader
  9. Batman
  10. Princess Sleeping Beauty

Kristina Hunt, clothing buyer at Argos, commented: “It is great to see the magic of Harry Potter still going strong after 20 years, closely followed by comic book heroes Superman and Spider-man.

“2018 has been a bit of a retro year with Willy Wonka and Where’s Wally? sticking firmly in the top ten.”
