Google releases most-searched for Halloween trends

IT: Chapter 2 and Stranger Things come top of the dress-up search listings.

Global search engine Google has released the 2019 version of its Frightgeist tool, for the third year running, with licences such as IT: Chapter 2 and Stranger Things coming top of the dress-up search listings.

The findings – which have been taken from Google Trends – reveal the top US Halloween trends in real time, reflecting the most popular searches across America as people turn to the internet for inspiration, reported sister publication Partyworldwide.net.

In revealing the most-searched-for Halloween costumes, Google Trends has identified this year’s most popular Halloween costume in the US (Fortnite), but also breaks the information down locally, state by state.

By tracking the latest searches in real time, the Google Frightgeist tool can display the data it gathers in several ways – by top trending costumes, state-by-state or via a Costume Map which shows which outfits are trending where.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this year’s list is pop-culture heavy, with films and series including IT: Chapter 2, Stranger Things and Spider-Man all featuring near the top.

Pennywise, the clown from IT, has been named the most-searched-for costume, followed by a classic witch outfit in second and Spider-Man in third. Searches for Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Fat Thor’ from Avengers: Endgame have risen by 4,600% while the Stranger Things’ Demogorgon has seen a search increase of 300%.

For couple’s costumes, Lilo and Stitch take the top spot, closely followed by both Mario and Luigi and Rick and Morty. Descendants is top of the searches for group costumes, just in front of Fortnite, Stranger Things, Toy Story and Star Wars.
