November 2024: Licensed Apparel & Accessories

For the first of our weekly ‘Featuring…’ newsletters focused on licensed apparel and accessories, LicensingSource.net asked Steve Manners, head of global marketing and UK managing director at Licensing International, to cast his expert eye over the sector.

Based on Licensing International’s 2024 Global Licensing Industry Study, apparel was one of the top performing categories in 2023, up 7.5% after dipping for a few years. What’s the reason behind the uptick? 

Steve: Fashion properties had a nice bounceback in 2023 after losing market share of licensed products for the past few years. Fashion properties clearly benefited from the return to in-person work environments. Additionally, the product categories that traditionally license fashion brands – such as Beauty Aids, Apparel, Accessories and Footwear – all had strong growth in 2023.

Another point is the continuing success of collaborations, which have accelerated to get licensed brands in front of new audiences of consumers. Product categories that benefited from licensed brand collaborations were the fashion-focused categories of Apparel, Accessories, Health & Beauty and Footwear…
