How well are museums and art galleries bouncing back in the wake of the pandemic? In the first of four ‘Featuring…’ newsletters focusing on the Heritage & Museums sector, we crunch the visitor numbers.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport has revealed data for its DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries – which include The British Museum, the National Gallery, Natural History Museum, National Portrait Gallery, the V&A, the Science Museum and the Tate – that shows a positive upward trend in visitor numbers. There were a total of 9.5 million visits to DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries between July and September 2022, and while this was around a third (31.4%) lower compared to the same period in 2019, it was almost twice (4m) the number recorded in the same period the previous year (2021) and over six times (8m) larger than in the period in 2020…
