Elmer stars on BBC One’s Lifeline appeal

Film featured Touch to See version of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.

Elmer the Patchwork Elephant was the star of a recent BBC One Lifeline appeal.

The film – which was first broadcast on BBC One on Sunday July 22 and is available on iPlayer until August 12 – featured the Touch to See version of Elmer.

Presented by actor and musician Martin Kemp, the appeal film focused on the charity Living Paintings’ work creating tactile and audio books for blind and partially sighted people of all ages.

The Touch to See version of Elmer by David McKee features specially adapted raised images of illustrations from the book, alongside clear braille pages and audio descriptions read by Su Pollard. It is distributed as part of a free online and postal library.

The ‘feely’ version of Elmer is one of Living Paintings’ most popular books and the charity is currently fundraising separately to create another accessible Elmer book – Elmer’s Walk – with the full support of Andersen Press.
