DHX Media inks co-production deal with DreamWorks

Five-year deal will see 130 episodes of new animated children’s content created.

DHX Media and DreamWorks Animation have confirmed a new five-year co-production partnership.

The deal means that 130 episodes of original animated children’s content will be created at DHX Studios. This will then air on DHX Television’s network of channels.

DHX will handle distribution for the content in Canada, while DWA will distribute to the rest of the world.

In addition, DHX Media has licensed more than 1,000 half hours of programming from DWA, to be broadcast from June 2016 across its channels.

This means that DHX Television will become the exclusive TV  network for this DreamWorks Animation content in Canada. Series coming to then network include All Hail King Julien, The Mr Peabody & Sherman Show (pictured), Dragons: Race to the Edge and The Croods among others.

DHX Media will also licence 300 half hours of teen content from AwesomenessTV (which is majority owned by DWA) for exclusive broadcast in Canada on Family Channel. The series will air on the new evening teen block, F2N, which launches in January 2016.

“We are excited to be teaming up with DreamWorks Animation and AwesomenessTV,” said Dana Landry, ceo of DHX Media.

“These are two of the world’s leading content producers in the kids, teen and family space and we look forward to creating fantastic new series with them, and to bringing many of their exciting titles to our channels for Canadian families to enjoy.”

Ann Daly, president of DreamWorks Animation, added: “This pact with DHX will not only expand the footprint of our existing library, but also create new branded series in Canada with global appeal.”
