Marvel’s first female super hero lead becomes biggest origin film opening for studio.
Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel has proved to be a true hero at the UK and Irish box office – taking £12.75 million over its three-day launch weekend.
The film – which stars Brie Larson as Marvel Studios’ first female lead super hero – had the biggest opening of any film so far this year and is the studio’s biggest ever origin movie.
Captain Marvel opened globally with $455 million, becoming the sixth largest worldwide debut in history and the biggest for a March debut. It is also the third biggest opening ever in the month of March at the UK and Ireland box office.
The successful start for Captain Marvel at the box office will also give a boost to the consumer products programme.
Lines available include a full toy range from Hasbro, Pop! Vinyl figurines from Funko, LEGO play-sets and Captain Marvel ladies t-shirts exclusive to George @ Asda among others.
“We are thrilled that Marvel Studios’ first lead female super hero movie has not only become the UK and Ireland’s number one film, but has had the biggest opening ever for a Marvel Studios’ character debut,” said Lee Jury, head of Walt Disney Studios UK & Ireland.
“We hope that Brie Larson’s portrayal of Carol Danvers will provide a new role model for generations to come and look forward to seeing Captain Marvel continue to go higher, further and faster at the box office.”
