Audiences say ‘hi Barbie’ in their droves as movie hits $337m debut at global box office

It seems that Barbie really is everything, with cinemas across the globe turning pink at the weekend as the movie notched up a hefty $337 million debut.

The figure – which was considerably ahead of the $174.2 million taken by nearest rival, Oppenheimer – is the second biggest global opening of 2023, behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($375.6 million), reported Screen Daily.

Barbie was also the biggest ever opening for a non-franchise Warner Bros. film.

Across international markets, the UK and Ireland led the way with an estimated $22.9 million, followed by Mexico ($22.3m), Brazil ($15.9m), Australia ($14.6m), Spain ($9.9m) and France ($9.8m).

In UK/Ireland, the number represents the biggest opening of 2023, and the biggest for a Warner Bros film since the pandemic.

In total, Barbie delivered the biggest opening of all time for a Warner Bros. film in 16 markets including Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
