A Minecraft Movie provides boost to box office with bumper global debut

A Minecraft Movie has provided a shot in the arm to the 2025 box office, notching up a $301 million global debut.

The Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures film exceeded expectations, recording $157 million for North America and $144 million across 75 international markets, reported Screen Daily.

Inspired by Mojang Studios’ bestselling video game of all time, A Minecraft Movie delivered the biggest domestic North American opening of 2025 and the biggest international debut from a US studio (except Chinese titles).

Internationally, the UK/Ireland is the top market, accounting for an estimated $19.9 million, followed by China ($14.5 million), Mexico ($11.2 million), Germany ($10.6 million) and Australia ($8.3 million).

In China – where Legendary East holds territory rights – A Minecraft Movie has already delivered the biggest 2025 gross for a US studio film in the territory in just three days.

The Nordic region enjoyed particular success – it generated a combined estimated $7 million across Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. In addition, Poland notched up an estimated debut of $6.1 million – the country’s biggest opening of all time in both box office and admissions.

With its $301 million opening, A Minecraft Movie has achieved an 81% share of the worldwide weekend top 10 chart.

Three markets are also still to release – Indonesia on 9 April, Japan on 25 April and South Korea on 30 April.

Screen Daily also pointed out that A Minecraft Movie is chasing the $1.36bn achieved worldwide in 2023 by The Super Mario Bros. Movie – $575m in North America and $786m for international.

In North America, box office for the year to date was running 11% behind 2024. That gap has now been reduced to a 6% deficit thanks to A Minecraft Movie.
