‘No EU, no Gruffalo’ says Axel Scheffler

Illustrator explains how relationship with Julia Donaldson wouldn’t have happened without EU.

The illustrator of The Gruffalo has said that the book would have been an entirely ‘different beast’ without the existence of the EU.

Axel Scheffler – who worked with author Julia Donaldson on the successful title, as well as a number of other projects – outlined his fears about the possibility of the UK leaving the European Union in a special blog post for publisher, Nosy Crow.

Without the EU, he said he would never have been in the UK to be able to collaborate with Julia and “millions of British children would have grown up without The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom’s witch and Stickman – at least in their existing forms”.

Axel also pointed out that the books he has illustrated would not have contributed to the British economy, creating jobs and revenue through the likes of films, TV series and merchandise.
