Licensed colouring book sector enjoys growth

Moomin, Lord of the Rings and Doctor Who among brands introduced to growing category.

Colouring books for adults is one of the fastest growing categories at the moment, and now several licensed brand have been introduced to the mix, with publishers introducing a swathe of new titles.

Studio Press was the first on the scene with its successful Harry Potter Colouring Book range, officially licensed from Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

The second book in the series – Harry Potter: Magical Creatures Colouring Book – was released in January, and is due to be followed up with a further title in July, coinciding with the stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Meanwhile, Macmillan Children’s Books has just launched the Moomin Colouring Book. The 96-page title features original artwork by Tove Jansson, a mix of patterns and scenes featuring the Moomins, plus the characters and some of their most memorable quotes.

HarperCollins is understood to be lining up an official Lord of the Rings Movie Trilogy Colouring Book, due to be published worldwide on June 2.

It has been reported that the book will include official character artwork from the films, as well as brand new colouring pages.

In addition, Doctor Who will get the colouring book treatment in a further two titles being lined up by BBC Books.

The first – Doctor Who: Travels in Time – will arrive in April, followed up by Doctor Who: Dot-to-Doc in July.

The two titles follow on from Doctor Who: The Colouring Book which launched in November last year.

BBC Books also launched Sherlock: The Mind Palace last year, which includes over 50 intricate scenes and cast images.

Meanwhile, in the US Marvel is lining up its next wave of colouring book releases. The autumn will see the arrival of titles featuring Doctor Strange, Women of Power and Star Wars.
