The Empire Strikes Back returns to box office summit

Classic Star Wars movie tops the UK and Ireland box office 40 years after original release.

Disney’s 40th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back has topped the UK and Ireland box office over the past weekend, as cinemas continue to gradually re-open their doors.

The film played in 94 locations, grossing £50,511 from those which returned figures, reported Screen Daily.

The Empire Strikes Back originally released in the UK in 1980, grossing £9 million. It was re-released in 1997, taking £7.2 million, with a Secret Cinema partnership in 2015 culminated in £6.3 million.

The four separate releases have notched up a cumulative total of £22.6 million.

While most cinemas are still to re-open, select locations in England and Northern Ireland have opened their doors. Scotland will re-open from Wednesday (July 15) with Wales following from July 27.

Cinemas in the Republic of Ireland have been allowed to re-open since June 29.
