The Gruffalo and The Snail and The Whale head to the Royal Albert Hall

Special concert due to take place at world famous venue on May 29, 2020.

Two of the world’s most beloved figures in children’s literature – Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler – will take to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall’s premiere of The Gruffalo and The Snail and the Whale in Concert on May 29.

Julia Donaldson will perform songs from The Gruffalo and The Snail and the Whale, while Axel Scheffler will bring his famous illustrations to life, live on screen, in a special on-stage appearance during the interval of the double-bill screening of the two animated films, produced by Magic Light Pictures.

The BBC Concert Orchestra will accompany the films, based on the picture books written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, playing live for the first time at the Hall the music from the films’ score, composed by René Aubry and conducted by Terry Davis.

There will be three performances, including a relaxed presentation suitable for children and adults with autism, sensory and communication impairments and learning disabilities as well as individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind and partially sighted.

“We’re proud to present this unique event, which will bring to life these two wonderful family films,” said Lucy Noble, artistic director at the Royal Albert Hall. “Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s picture books have enchanted children young and old, and this show will allow audiences to experience these magical adaptations in an all-new way.

“I’m especially thrilled that we’re able to present a relaxed performance of the show, opening up the event to audiences who might not otherwise be able to enjoy it.”

Previous family films screened with live music at the Hall have included The Snowman, Fantasia and Frozen.
