Mission accomplished for English Channel swimmers

Relay team featuring Sutikki’s Stephen Gould completes challenge in 12 hours 54 minutes.

The six person relay team captained by Sutikki’s Stephen Gould successfully completed their English Channel challenge last week.

In conditions which were described as ‘rather lumpy’, the team saw their first swimmer set off at 3.25am on Wednesday (July 10).

Stephen (pictured second left) was the third swimmer into the water at 5.30am, with his leg taking the team into the Separation Zone between British and French waters. This is also the stretch of water where ships can discharge their bilge…

The task was made even harder by all swimmers eventually having to swim on the Port side of the board – not good if you breathe to the left – to try and get some shelter from the south westerly wind and increasingly choppy sea.

Unfortunately, this was also the side of the boat where the exhaust was located.

A constant battering of waves and diesel fumes eventually lead to the inevitable, with two members of the team succumbing to sea sickness.

However, after 12 hours and 54 minutes, the lead swimmer walked up the beach at Cap Blanc-Nez – further north than expected due to a strange tidal shift that day.
