Streaming giant to rent 14 sound stages, workshops and office space at site in Surrey.
Netflix has upped its commitment to the UK, confirming it will open a new UK production hub at Shepperton Studios.
The streaming giant will rent the 14 sound stages, as well as workshops and office space at the Surrey site from this October, reported Screen Daily.
The move further ramps up Netflix’s presence in the UK. The number of employees at its London office has grown from 15-20 to around 130 over the past 12 months. In addition, over 25,000 cast, crew and extras have worked on around 40 Netflix originals and co-productions across Britain.
Just last week, Netflix execs were called to the House of Lords to answer questions about its commitment to making British programming.
Benjamin King, director of public policy UK at Netflix, outlined how the company is confident there is “substantial scope” for it to increase its investment in the UK, with the territory sitting third behind the US and Canada in terms of its importance.
Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, said the company was “incredibly proud” to be part of the Shepperton heritage.
Pinewood Group, which owns Shepperton Studios, is undergoing a £500m expansion at the site which will include a further 16 sound stages.
