Horrible Histories movie team sign for CMC keynote

Producer, writer, director and original author will deliver Creative Keynote at Sheffield event.

Ahead of the cinema release of Horrible Histories: Movie – Rotten Romans, key creatives behind one of the most popular franchises in family entertainment will take to the stage on Wednesday July 3 for the Creative Keynote at this year’s Children’s Media Conference.

Producer/writers Caroline Norris and Giles Pilbrow, director Dominic Brigstocke and original book series author Terry Deary will reveal the secrets to creating kids’ comedy that parents love, how they made learning such a laugh and the challenges they faced taking the franchise on its biggest outing to date.

The panel will be hosted by broadcaster and film critic – and self-confessed Horrible Histories fan – Rhianna Dhillon.

The Horrible Histories books have notched up global sales topping 32 million, while the TV show has multiple accolades from BAFTA, RTS and British Comedy Awards to its name.

The movie – with a cast list including Nick Frost, Kim Cattrall, Kate Nash and Sir Derek Jacobi – hits UK and Ireland cinemas on July 26.

“As Horrible Histories conquers the world and transforms once again to a big-screen brand, we thought it time for CMC to celebrate that phenomenal success,” said Greg Childs, editorial director at CMC. “Past Creative Keynotes at CMC have explored how a single creative genius finds their inspiration and translates that to the page, stage or screen.

“This year we’ll consider how the collective genius which is the Horrible Histories brand maintains its mojo and continues to make millions of kids worldwide laugh – and learn.”

The Creative Keynote will complement this year’s Opening Keynote on Tuesday July 2, which will see writer and presenter Nadiya Hussain interviewed by Newsround presenter, Leah Boleto.

Taking place from July 2-4 in Sheffield, CMC is now in its 16th year and expects to welcome more than 1,200 delegates from the world of children’s entertainment.
