This year’s invites feature quotes from female luminaries from the design world.
Celebrated designer Heather Flynn – creator of Alice Scott and co-creator of Happy Jackson – is the artist behind the striking official invitations for this year’s Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards, which are now dropping onto desks.
Never one at a loss for ideas and keen to make a statement, both in its design appeal as well in the additional message it carries, Heather went to town to arrive at a beautiful keepsake that packs a punch.
Here, Heather shares her thinking behind the design approach and her decision to include quotes from female luminaries from the design world, Dorothy Draper, Jen Gotch and Marcia Kilgore.
“At a time when equality has never been so scrutinised or championed, I’ve always felt very fortunate to work in an industry where I’m surrounded by successful women at all levels, shaping and pushing the category forward. It’s not the case for all sectors, so it is an inspiration and deserves to be celebrated.
“Drawing on this, for this year’s invites I chose to profile three women from across creative disciplines, whose principles and achievements feel to me as fresh today as when they set out in business. Each epitomises a quality from which we can all draw inspiration. A rule breaker, a maverick, a serial entrepreneur – these women not only achieved success on their own terms, they commercialised their ideas in an industry not always welcoming of their point of view. In a year when retail challenges more than ever, the quotes I’ve chosen offer a reminder to think differently, to innovate and to go with your gut. They’ll all be going on my desk noticeboard.”
One of the quotes which appears on the tickets, by Jen Gotch (co-founder and creative director of lifestyle brand, Ban.do) – ‘You have to pay attention to the world, the people in it, to your consumer and identify that at any time, something that has worked for years may stop working. You have to be ready to pivot’ – is all the more appropriate given the last minute decision to relocate the B&LLAs from The Dorchester to the Hilton Park Lane in protest at the barbaric laws passed by the Sultan of Brunei (owner of The Dorchester) in Brunei.
