Value retailer says week beginning December 17 was the busiest in its history.
Aldi has become the first of the supermarkets to unveil its Christmas retail trading updates, with the value retailer reporting that it sold almost £1bn of goods in the UK during December.
Aldi said that the week beginning December 17 was the busiest in its history, with sales up 10% on the previous year.
Chief executive, Giles Hurley, commented: “We begin the New Year with great momentum as the UK’s fastest growing supermarket and on the back of record Christmas sales.”
Aldi will continue with its store opening programme in 2019. The retailer opened 65 new stores in 2018, reaching a total of 827. It is aiming for a goal of 1,200 shops in the UK by the end of 2025.
Christmas trading updates are due from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose this week.
