LIMA UK Rising Stars: Katie Sharp

We find out more about Beanstalk’s brand development manager.

Katie Sharp

Manager, Brand Development, Beanstalk

My route into the licensing industry went something like this…

Like most people I unexpectedly fell into licensing. I left university and started working as a graduate for a bank. It took me six months or so to realise it wasn’t something I could see myself doing in the long run, so after taking some time out to travel, I started looking for opportunities in a more creative industry and I landed my first job at 4Kids as a marketing and licensing assistant.

How long in the industry?

Six years.

When I was growing up, I had no idea that ‘licensing’ was an industry, so I wanted to be…

A pilot. I loved traveling so thought it would be a great way to see more of the world.

Biggest inspiration in the licensing industry?

Serena Sibbald, vp brand development, at Beanstalk is a constant source of inspiration and a fountain of knowledge when it comes to all things licensing.

What are you most proud of within your licensing career to date?

Being part of the team to broker the licensing agreement between Tassimo and Beanstalk client Diageo for the Baileys Latte Macchiato Tassimo coffee pods, which then went on to win Best Brand Licensed Food or Beverage Product at the B&LLAs earlier this year. It was great to see such a fantastic product get that level of industry recognition.

Best thing about your current role?

No day is ever the same! Even when some days are more challenging than others I know there is a huge amount of support from the people I work with. Team work makes the dream work.

Licensed character you can most identify with (and why)?

Harry Potter. There are always days when a magic wand would really come in handy.

What were your first thoughts when you were revealed as a nominee for the LIMA UK Rising Star Award?

Complete surprise! There are so many talented people within the industry, but it is really lovely to receive this level of recognition early on in my career.

The adage goes, once you enter the licensing industry, you never really leave… what are your short-term goals for your career in licensing?

Continue learning – the industry is constantly evolving, with new brands entering the licensing arena every year, so keeping up with the pace is my number one goal.

The LIMA UK Rising Star award will be presented as part of The Licensing Awards, which take place on Tuesday September 11 at The Grosvenor Hotel, London.
