Industry Issue: The changing face of retail

We ask licensees for their views on the retail landscape, starting with Gemma International.

The retail landscape is ever-changing and that has probably never been more evident than now, and for licensees this presents a whole new set of challenges.

The Source asked some key names how they see the future of licensed product at retail and where potential further growth could come from.

Today: Tim Rudd-Clarke, licensing director, Gemma International

“We think the future of licensed product will always be sound and we are confident, but subject to the ebb and flow of certain pressures.

UK retail is in a state of evolution. We have seen the sad demise of Toys R Us and other retailers are also under pressure from online retailers who don’t have the same overhead base, plus benefit from highly efficient and sophisticated distribution systems. As licensees we need to adapt and make sure we react quickly to new trends.

As for the high street and traditional retail, there are a lot of empty units which need to be occupied and landlords will have to look at more realistic rents. Business rates need to reduce to allow traditional retail to flourish.”
