Marvel Studios has confirmed that Avengers: Infinity War has become the biggest superhero movie of all time in the UK and Ireland.

This figure means that it overtakes the previous number one – The Dark Knight Rises – which made a total of £56.3 million at the UK box office.

Avengers: Infinity War – which was released in the UK on April 26 and stars the biggest ensemble of characters put together on screen – is already the fifth biggest film of all time worldwide.

Opening in China this weekend the film made an estimated $200 million – the second biggest opening ever within the country.

It follows on from Marvel Studios’ success with Black Panther – which has made over £50 million in the UK and Ireland.

Next up is Ant-Man and the Wasp which releases on August 3.
