‘There is a future for the physical store’

Sainsbury’s Argos ceo says businesses that do offline and online well are the ones which will succeed.

The ceo of Sainsbury’s Argos has championed the physical store at Retail Week Live.

Speaking at the annual event yesterday (March 7), John Rogers (pictured) claimed there is a future for the physical store and it is actually the businesses that do offline and online well who are the ones that will succeed.

“Click & Collect is growing more quickly than home deliveries,” he said. “By 2025, 37% of shoppers will be using ultra convenient delivery because, ultimately, convenience wins.”

The event also saw the new Minister for Retail, Andrew Griffiths, announce the UK’s first Retail Sector Council alongside Richard Pennycook, chairman of Fenwick, The Hut Group and Howden Joinery Group.

The new industry-led Council will act as a champion for future growth and seek to encourage positive change in the sector as it adapts to rapidly changing consumer habits.

Retail Week md Chris Brook-Carter opened the first day by telling delegates: “I have no doubt the challenges we are facing over the next 12 months will feel as daunting as they are exciting, but retailers always live through change: it’s never been an industry for the faint-hearted.

“Disruptive technologies and businesses are emerging in every retail corner and entrepreneurialism has never been more alive. We are in an exhilarating position and our responsibility is to move faster still.”

Retail Week Live continues today (March 8) at The Intercontinental London O2 with speakers including Secretary of State Esther McVey, M&S’ Steve Rowe and David Gandy, who will be involved with a panel on how to find the best ambassador for your brand.
