National Geographic begins 130th celebrations

Celebrations to mark milestone kick off as licensing programme ramps up.

National Geographic has kicked off its 130th anniversary celebrations of the brand with a Gala Event, held at the National History Museum.

Hosted by Professor Brian Cox and Joanna Lumley, the ‘130 Years of Exploration’ event was attended by many of the world’s top explorers, naturalists, scientists and campaigners, as well as select guests from the licensing and publishing arenas.

The fact that this milestone event took place in the UK, is testament to the increased focus on the brand’s EMEA operations with licensing forming an integral part of this.

The recent appointment of high profile executive Helena Mansell-Stopher to the position of director of consumer products UK licensing of National Geographic Partners (NGP) is further proof of this strategy.

“It is just incredible what National Geographic has achieved over the last 130 years, leading research in so many areas from the deep seas to space. Our job now is to explore ways of using this incredibly strong brand to inform and inspire future generations through consumer products,” commented Helena (pictured above far left at the anniversary event with, right-left, LSB’s Jakki Brown, IMG’s svp of worldwide licensing Matthew Primack, explorer Martin Edström and Clarks’ chief brand officer Jason Beckley).
