Star Wars and James Bond boost profits at Pinewood

Studio also reveals work has started on Episode 8 and spin off space opera, Rogue One.

Pinewood Studios has credited James Bond and the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens in helping to boost its profits.

Both Spectre and The Force Awakens used the group’s Buckinghamshire studio. It reported an increase in pre-tax profits of 13.2% to £4.3 million in the six months to the end of December.

Operating profits more than doubled to £7 million from £2.5 million in the same period a year earlier.

However, revenue dipped slightly to £38.2 million from £38.5 million in 2014.

The studio also confirmed that productions had started on the next Star Wars movie – Episode 8 – as well as spin-off space opera, Rogue One (due for release next December).

Already Europe’s largest studio, Pinewood is expanding in a bid to compete for US rivals and attract more Hollywood films. Construction of the first phase of its expansion is due for completion in June 2016.
