Thanksgiving Parade adds new characters

Angry Birds’ Red and Ice Age’s Scrat among new giant characters in Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.

The 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicked off the holiday season in the US yesterday (November 26), with a host of licensed characters taking starring roles.

Four new giant characters were added to the line-up this year, including Angry Birds’ Red from Rovio Entertainment and Ice Age’s Scrat and his acorn from 20th Century Fox.

Returning characters to the parade – which was celebrating its 89th anniversary – included Adventure Time’s Finn and Jake, Hello Kitty, Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, Paddington, Pikachu, Snoopy and Woodstock, SpongeBob Squarepants, Red Mighty Morphin Power Ranger and Thomas the Tank Engine among others.

There were also six new floats – including A Charlie Brown Christmas ‘Snoopy’s Doghouse’ by Peanuts Worldwide to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the property.

More than three million New Yorkers and visitors lined the parade route for the event, according to Macy’s. Another 50 million tune into NBC to watch the giant balloons, floats, marching bands, clowns and celebrities.
