Raymond Weil David Bowie watch unveiled

Collaboration with David Bowie Estate features famous Terry O’Neill portrait.

Swiss watch brand Raymond Weil has revealed a limited edition timepiece in honour of the late David Bowie.

Created in collaboration with the David Bowie Estate, the special Freelancer model has been designed as a tribute to the life and musical career of the star, with just 3,000 available.

The timepiece takes design cues from some of David’s many personas.

The 42mm case contains a dial resembling a vinyl record featuring some of the most emblematic design cues of the British artist. A stylised version of the lightning bolt painted across his face that first appeared on the cover of the Aladdin Sane album in 1973 is detailed in red at 12 o’clock.

In addition, the pop art logo designed by Andy Warhol for David Bowie and revealed on the cover of the album Diamond Dogs in 1974 is located above 6 o’clock.

Meanwhile, the sapphire caseback features a portrait of the star from 1974 by photographer Terry O’Neill, whose work is licensed out by Iconic Images and TSBA Group.

“He was an artist in a league of his own, a visionary, multi-faceted icon whose work is testimony to an exceptional career as a musician and a creative,” said Elie Bernheim, ceo of Raymond Weil.

“His metamorphoses both in terms of style and music studded his career, catapulting both himself and his characters to legendary status.”

Terry O’Neill added: “I’ve always felt that there was a real synergy behind great timepieces and photography. The precision of keeping time is akin to a photographer needing to know the exact moment to capture an iconic image.

“As a watch collector myself, this Raymond Weil collaboration is a wonderful project to be affiliated with. Their watches are a thing of beauty.

“I’m thrilled they’ve selected to pay tribute to David Bowie in such a way and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
