Retail footfall struggles post-Christmas

Figures from Springboard show that biggest drop in footfall was seen on Boxing Day.

New data from Springboard has shown that retail footfall has struggled in the immediate aftermath of the Christmas period.

During the three-day period from Monday December 26 to Wednesday December 28, there was a drop of 5.8%, falling across all three destination types (shopping centres, high street and out of town).

The biggest drop was seen on Boxing Day, which footfall declining 7.3% year on year.

However, shopping centres put in a solid performance on Wednesday 28 with a rise of 15.5%. This followed a 5% drop on Tuesday and 20.7% on Monday.

Footfall was also expected to decline on New Year’s Day, with Springboard predicting a drop of between 20% and 25% compared to New Year’s Day 2016, mainly due to Sunday’s shorter trading hours and people looking to defer their shopping until the Bank Holiday Monday.
