Pokémon Go among Google’s top 2016 trending terms

Game tops global trending searches for year; second in UK listing to Euro 2016.

Google has confirmed that Pokémon Go was the top global trending search in 2016.

The game also finished at number two in the UK listing, beaten by Euro 2016, but coming above David Bowie, Donald Trump, Prince and Brexit/EU referendum.

Google’s list is based on words and phrases that stand out from the norm (as an unfiltered list would be relatively unchanged from one year to the next).

Pokémon also came out top in UK queries by topic. ‘How to play Pokémon Go?’ was the most popular ‘How to’ question, while ‘What is Pokémon Go?’ was the most popular ‘What is’ entry.

Other licensed names which made it into the UK and global listings included Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War.
