Q Pootle 5 crowns World Space Week competition winner

Schools had been asked to create a new friend for the character as part of competition.

Alien Q Pootle 5 and his creator, Nick Butterworth, were on hand this week to crown the winner of a special national schools competition.

The children’s author and illustrator – and the Q Pootle 5 costume character – visited Withycombe Raleigh Church of England Primary School.

The visit followed on from a national schools competition which ran in October as part of a partnership with World Space Week UK.

The competition, which was designed to encourage young children to have a greater interest in space, asked schools to create a new friend for Q Pootle 5. Seven year old Chloe Dudman from Exmouth won for the character ‘Professor Fred’.

The school was treated to a full day of entertainment from Nick including interactive shows – with live drawing, stories and a behind the scenes peek at how Q Pootle 5 jumped from page to screen, costume character appearances and a signing.

Nick commented: “We loved Chloe’s creation ‘Professor Fred’, he is fun and full of life. It was a real pleasure to meet Chloe and share with everybody at the school our love of stories, space and how we make Q Pootle 5.”

Chloe added: “When I got to meet Nick Butterworth I felt a bit nervous and a bit excited, too. I loved having a cuddle with Q Pootle 5 and felt proud of my drawing.”
