The National Gallery adds publishing to roster

Ten-year deal secured with Hachette Children’s Group and Octopus Publishing.

The National Gallery is continuing to build up its licensing presence, securing a ten-year deal with Hachette Children’s Group and Octopus Publishing.

The agreement covers books for both children and adults.

Octopus’ Ilex imprint will launch its branded list in spring 2017 including a pair of adult activity titles – a spot the difference puzzle book for grown-ups and a giant dot to dot puzzle book.

Meanwhile, Hachette Children’s Group will begin publishing in summer 2017 with a range from artist Paul Thurlby. The first title will be a children’s guide to the gallery.

Paul will also be creating an alphabet celebration of art, A is for Art, in the style of his best selling title, L is for London in autumn 2017, as well as sticker and activity books.

James Mayhew, whose picture book character Katie as been introducing young children to art for 27 years, will also be contributing a sticker and activity book.

This will complement the National Gallery’s Katie-themed merchandise for children and adults, which launched in 2014.

Judith Mather, buying and merchandise director at the National Gallery Company (pictured), commented: “It is a pleasure to have this relationship with the Hachette group.

“We are looking forward to producing new titles in the adult activity book market. We are also delighted to be working with Paul Thurlby on an addition to his successful city series – A is for Art and the Children’s Guide are extremely exciting projects.”

JELC is acting as the licensing agent for the National Gallery.
