Egmont will produce range of kids puzzle books using the famous cube as inspiration.
The Smiley Company has secured a deal with Egmont for the Rubik’s brand, which will see the launch of a range of kids’ puzzle titles.
The multi-year deal – revealed at the Frankfurt Book Fair – also includes the rights to create Rubik’s branded one-shot magazines.
The range of puzzle books will take the famous cube as inspiration, focusing on brain-busting and entertaining puzzles, with the aim being to create ‘clever books for clever kids’.
The UK will be the launch territory for the books and magazines, with the first titles hitting shelves in 2017.
Lori Heiss, vp brand strategy at The Smiley Company, commented: “We are thrilled to have partnered with Egmont for a range of Rubik’s branded kids puzzle books.
“They are a world-class partner who will bring a Rubik’s-worthy twist to the books created for this programme, with content that will both challenge and entertain children across the world in the same way the cube has done since its 1980 launch.”
Emma Cairns-Smith, head of global acquisitions at Egmont, added: “I am absolutely delighted to have acquired global publishing rights for Rubik’s.
“Rubik’s is a brand that fascinates both kids and, crucially, parents. It is this dual appeal which leads me to believe that Rubik’s has great potential in publishing. We are looking forward to developing a fantastic and innovative range of books and magazines that challenge and inspire kids – just as the cube does every day.”
