Licensed characters to star for World Book Day

Peppa Pig, Where’s Wally? and Horrid Henry all have official £1 books for the 2017 initiative.

A number of licensed characters are set to star in several of the official £1 books for next year’s World Book Day, which marks the 20th anniversary of the initiative.

Peppa Loves World Book Day (Ladybird), Where’s Wally? The Fantastic Journey (Walker Books) and Horrid Henry: Funny Fact Files are all in the list of £1 books for 2017.

In addition, the reading for pleasure charity has recruited authors including David Walliams, Dame Jacqueline Wilson and Julia Donaldson to help it reach more children and young people than ever.

The authors will each contribute an official World Book Day £1 book, which children can get for free in exchange for a the £1 book token available to all schoolchildren in the UK and Ireland.

World Book Day director Kirsten Grant said: “World Book Day is about creating readers for the future by igniting a love of books and reading in children and young people.

“It’s about encouraging them to visit their local bookshop and empowering them to make their own choices about the kinds of books they want to read.”

World Book Day 2017 will take place on Thursday March 2.
