B&LLAs 2025: “It demonstrates the potential in brand licensing and provides a great showcase”

Ian Downes, founder of Start Licensing, explains why the company supports the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards.

Why do you sponsor the B&LLAs?

“Start Licensing has been involved from the launch of the B&LLAs. We think now as we did then that the B&LLAs shine a very welcome light on the brand licensing sector. At the time the B&LLAs launched the sector was less heralded. The B&LLAs has helped contribute to a growing interest in the sector, not least among brand owners. I think many brand owners have recognised the value that can be unlocked by brand licensing. Seeing other brands recognised at the B&LLAs helps instil confidence in the process. We are pleased to be part of this and support the B&LLAs.”

What’s your favourite thing about the awards?

“I think the B&LLAs succeeds in bringing the constituent parts of the industry together in one place in a focused way – brand owners, agents, manufacturers and retailers. It demonstrates the potential in brand licensing and provides a great showcase for the sector. I love seeing the nominations and hearing the stories behind the deals. I find that I leave the B&LLAs brimming with new ideas and a pocketful of business cards (although increasingly these are vCards on my phone, I still like a traditional business card). I am pleased that Start Licensing is involved in the brand licensing sector and being at the B&LLAs helps convey our involvement to the wider industry.”

Why do you think companies and retailers working in the licensing space should attend the awards?

“If you are interested in brand licensing and see your business as part of this industry sector, it is a ‘must attend’. You will meet a lot of the key players in the marketplace and gain some great insights into the sector. It is also a very well curated event. One highlight of it is the talk given by an industry expert; there have been some wonderful and inspirational individuals delivering these keynote speeches over the years. I am looking forward to this year’s one. I think the keynote is in itself a good reason to attend.”

The Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards 2025 takes place on Thursday 24 April at the Royal Lancaster London.
